Horse jumping practice photos

13 04 2008

This summer, I’m going to be photographing several horse jumping shows around Edmonton. I know nothing about horse shows, so I got my friend Sarah (www.smavrophoto.com) to show me the ropes at a small show west of Edmonton today. I learned the patterns, the scoring, the order, and other generally useful bits of knowledge to help me prepare for the summer.
The photos are relatively repetitive, so I’ll just post a couple from the show. I also included a few that I took while they were warming up.

Feeling adequately prepared for a busy summer,

Another day, another few photos

12 04 2008

I was out for quite a while today waiting for planes to fly overhead, and NOTHING came by. I should know, as a former airport worker, that Saturdays are super low traffic days.. Here’s what I got instead. I wasn’t very happy with the day overall, because I got none of what I wanted to get, but I guess you can’t win them all.

First photos from my new Nikon D300

10 04 2008

I got my Nikon D300 this morning.  This is a huge upgrade from my previous cameras, the Nikon D50 and Nikon D2H.  Literally twice as good.  Naturally, once I got my hands on it I went straight out to take some photos.  You might recognize the barn from this post, it’s the same barn as the one in my first ever blog post.  The weather really added a cool feeling to the photo, it’s been really foggy here lately.

Off-topic:  SO SHARKS GO!  I hate you Flames.

You can count on lots more posts now that the season is over =)  School’s almost over too!  FINALLY.

Reading Week 2008

1 03 2008

Last week was reading week for us university folk, so we took advantage of it with a 4 day trip to the mountains.  We went to Fernie, Kicking Horse, and Sunshine for some snowboarding.  It was a great trip, the weather couldn’t have been better.  All there was for the entire weekend were blue skies, -5C  weather, and great snow.

Verdict:

Fernie:  Snow was AMAZING.  I’ve always heard that they had the best, and it didn’t let me down.  There was awesome powder everywhere, and overall conditions were awesome.  The trees were all completely covered, which made for some very interesting and cool views.  It was very scenic as well.

Kicking Horse:  This mountain was exactly what I like.  Steep, good tree runs, and long runs.  There were a few really hard runs, but they were fun.  We went to the top of the mountain to hit a run that isn’t accessible by the lift.  We had to hike about 10 mins, but it was worth it.  The powder was good, not quite to Fernie’s standards, but the awesome runs made up for it.  I’ll definitely return soon.

Sunshine:  This is kind of our “home base”.  We go here a half dozen times, or more, every year.  It was the first time I’d ever seen sunshine, at Sunshine, so that was nice.

On to the pics:

till next time,

dylan.

Back from Calgary, back to school, still busy as ever.

6 01 2008

Hope everyone had a good Christmas, and a good New Year.  I went to Calgary on Dec. 24 to see family, and then worked the Mac’s Midget Hockey Tournament from Dec. 25 to Jan. 1 editing for 3 photographers.  After that trip, I basically never wanted to see a computer ever again.  In total, I edited over 17,000 photos from three photographers over the course of six days.  It was really busy, and pretty stressful, but worth it.  I got to see my family, and spend a couple days with friends, so overall it was a good Holiday.  Also, I can now say that I’ve been on the catwalk of 2 NHL arenas, so that’s pretty cool. here are 3 shots I took from the parking lot of the Max Bell arena at about midnight, the only time I got any free time :)   Back to school tomorrow… ugh. -Dylan
